Elegance and Form

Less an event than a ritual—the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este is an annual celebration of automotive design and technology history, characterized by timeless elegance and style. Between the grand hotel façade, manicured gravel and the picturesque Lake Como, the most spectacular cars of the past and present once again took center stage this year—classics of past decades as well as design visions for the automotive future.

This year, particular attention was given to three world premieres from BMW: Among them, the new BMW M2 CS—a further performance-enhanced version of the compact sports car with 530 hp (pictured below with BMW M designer Oliver Heilmer).

BMW Motorrad presented the Concept RR, an enormously expressive preview of the next generation of RR Superbike models, as well as the BMW Concept Speedtop—a coupé limited to 70 units with references to the tradition of the Shooting Brake (read more here).

While those three BMW innovations looked to the more or less distant future, an impressive variety of historic vehicles once again delighted visitors and judges alike this year. In the end, the coveted »Trofeo BMW Group — Best of Show« award went to an Alfa Romeo Tipo B (P3) from 1934—a vehicle that still stands for the highest Italian design elegance and outstanding technology today.

The public prize »Trofea Coppa d’Oro Villa d’Este« was awarded to a BMW 507 from 1957—a roadster that is one of the brand’s most influential icons.

The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este as a stage for past, present and future concepts—in 2025, the western shore of Lake Como once again demonstrated how elegantly different eras and design approaches can come together in a common setting. [Ed.]

Open luxury cocoon

With the Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series, Mercedes-Maybach is expanding its portfolio with a model that sets new accents both formally and conceptually. As the brand’s first roadster and fourth model overall, the two-seater takes Maybach’s design signature into previously unfamiliar sporty territory—while remaining true to the typical combination of technical precision, material sophistication and aesthetic clarity.

It seems almost paradoxical that the closed roof suits the Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series particularly well—the vehicle that, according to the manufacturer, was designed as the »ultimate open-air experience«. But even with the soft top down, the two-seater is a confident expression of design: with an elegantly elongated silhouette that reinterprets the iconic lines of the SL and a characterful yet harmonious surface architecture. Especially when open, it becomes clear how closely the proportions, materiality and depth of design detail are coordinated in the Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series .

Two curated design concepts characterize the exterior appearance: »White Ambience« and »Red Ambience« play with the brand’s traditional two-tone color scheme and are inspired by current color trends from fashion, architecture and design. »White Ambience« is presented with Obsidian Black metallic in the upper section of the vehicle and Manufaktur Opalite White magno in the lower section, while in »Red Ambience« Obsidian Black metallic contrasts with Manufaktur Garnet Red metallic. In addition, a palette of over 50 paint colors is also available on request, including historically inspired tones from the Mercedes-Benz and Maybach archives as well as natural colors or fashion-coded variants.

To further enhance the exclusivity (and expressiveness), the hood is also available on request with an integrated Maybach pattern in graphite grey uni—a pattern applied by pixel paint, which is applied in a multi-stage, complex process and sometimes even by hand. Each step in the production is subject to complex technical requirements and demands the utmost precision in execution.

In the exterior design, the radiator grille with fine vertical slats in an A-shape contour and the chrome-framed windscreen in particular characterize the strong design expression. Details such as an elongated chrome fin or a prominent upright Mercedes star on the hood or the rose gold accent in the headlights set additional accents.

The interior is dominated by a consistent material logic: light, sustainably tanned nappa leather not only enhances the seats in their new, floral design, but also the door panels, the center console and the space behind the seats, creating a generous feeling of space and the »cocooning effect« typical of the brand . Galvanized seat backrests and trim parts in silver chrome provide points of contrast in an interior that is otherwise characterized by an almost simple lightness.

In addition to design quality, a luxury brand such as Mercedes-Maybach naturally also applies the highest standards to the driving experience and acoustic tuning, as Chapter was able to see for itself during test drives in Ibiza. This level of comfort is also consistently implemented in an open-top model with a sporty character. The Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series is well-balanced, powerful and, despite its considerable dimensions, never sluggish, even through bends of all shapes and sizes. Even when the soft top is open, the interior remains acoustically controlled in typical Maybach fashion: In addition to technical refinements for noise insulation, the materiality of the interior also contributes noticeably to a feeling of calm and seclusion. A driving experience that is characterized less by speed than by sovereignty, comfort and style.

Speaking of style: the SL can also be extended with an optional accessories collection—under the MAYBACH Icons of Luxury label, which includes leather jackets, sneakers and bags based on the colors and materials of the vehicle. After all, such a perfect design concept should not be sabotaged by the fashionable inconsistencies of its driver.

25 years ago, A. Lange Söhne presented the DATOGRAPH, the first chronograph since the revival of the brand by the legendary Walter Lange in 1990. It was a masterpiece of watchmaking that combined highly sophisticated functions with a well-balanced dial design and represented an important milestone for the renowned German watch manufacturer. As the highlight of the anniversary year 2024, A. Lange Söhne is now presenting the DATOGRAPH HANDWERKSKUNST – a special edition limited to 25 pieces that also reflects the brand’s constant endeavor to raise artistic craftsmanship to an even higher level. Metamorphosis by Studio PALAM

PALAM, founded by Tobias Faisst and Vitaly Kiaiev, is a »hybrid studio« that specializes in animation and the creation of CGI images, among other things. Despite the technologically progressive focus in the realization of their work—the idea for their project »Metamorphosis« comes from a very traditional source of inspiration and is based on extremely human considerations. »[Franz Kafka’s] story of Gregor Samsa, who suddenly transforms into a beetle, inspired us to embrace the theme and weave it with our own narrative,« says Faisst. The result is a 3D animation that symbolically links the car object as a central element with the process of metamorphosis.

»Introducing«: Concept Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed

There could not be a more fitting place and time to unveil a progressive concept car designed as a tribute to motorsport and legendary racing cars than the impressive backdrop of Monaco, shortly before the start of the prestigious Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend. With this in mind, Mercedes-Benz delighted media representatives in the Principality’s harbor with the exclusive world premiere of the Concept Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed. The sensational concept car was unveiled on a floating pontoon and also fascinated the drivers of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, who were present.

The completely open-top, two-seater performance car celebrates the brand’s great racing tradition and, as a concept car, also provides a preview of the first model in the strictly limited Mercedes-Benz Mythos series—a highly exclusive special edition in the brand’s top-end segment. The radically progressive design of the Concept Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed is characterized not only by its completely open construction, without a roof and windscreen, but also by its low, elongated silhouette, a very low front end with a pronounced shark nose and highlight design elements such as the so-called HALO (a safety bar known from Formula 1). An exciting gimmick: two aerodynamically optimized helmets that were specially designed and manufactured for the Concept Mercedes AMG PureSpeed.

In the center of the French capital, at Centre Pompidou, the collection offers a comprehensive overview of the work of the Romanian-French artist and thus, brings us closer to the work of one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century. Chapter TV presents: A documentary about the visual and acoustic concept of the installation »Berl-Berl« and the accompanying complex technology that brings it to life.

With the immersive live simulation »Berl-Berl« in Halle am Berghain, Danish artist Jakob Kudsk Steensen presents his latest project. Commissioned by Light Art Space (LAS) and in collaboration with sound composer Matt McCorkle, spatial sound designer Lugh O’Neill, and musician Arca, he has created a multi-layered digital installation that takes visitors back to Berlin’s origins as a swampland. Using an innovative generative audio concept and an engaging virtual universe created with digital audio and video game technology, they transformed the 1,435-square-foot space into a mythical swampland.

In the first episode, Paris-based designer Mathieu Peyroulet Ghilini who also devotes himself to painting and drawing in his object-focused practice, presents his Kyoto Kawara Bowl. The special nature of the bowl, created in collaboration with a Japanese ceramic master, is not only evident in its aesthetic qualities. While the Kyoto Kawara Bowl had to overcome linguistic barriers in the process of its creation, its contemporary, abstract design combined with the choice of traditional materials also continues to ensure that its description first sends us on a search for the right words.

»At Home«: A visit with automotive designer Jo Stenuit

The combination of well-being and functionality is not only a core element of Mazda’s design philosophy, but also characterizes the interior style of design director Jo Stenuit. In his house, a passion for collecting, an affinity for design and a love of Japanese culture unite to create an oasis of calm in the middle of Frankfurt. Chapter TV visited the automotive designer in his home.

One look at the ceiling-high shelf at the side of the dining table reveals why Jo Stenuit, Design Director of Mazda Motor Europe, calls himself a collector. It contains countless vases in various shades of red, many of them flea market finds or souvenirs from abroad. However, the Belgian-born designer’s passion for collecting is not only focused on colorful clay vessels – old and new objects with different functions, all of them carefully selected and placed, are lined up in the designer’s home. He is particularly proud of his Braun record player – by design legend Dieter Rams. As with the interior of a car, he tries to combine a sense of well-being and functionality in his home. »I firmly believe that you can have that special feeling of coming home even when you get into a car. At Mazda, we try to create that primarily through reduction, a clear design language and the choice of materials«, the designer explains. These three parameters also seem to apply to Jo Stenuit’s interior design style. In addition, Mazda’s focus on carefully manufactured craftsmanship is reflected in the choice of furniture and decorative elements.
